Golf Fore the Kids was inspired by Jacob Osit and Nicholas Vera, who were each diagnosed with cancer at age 4. Both boys endured devastating treatment plans and are now learning how to be little boys again. Their strengths and bravery motivated their families to take action to prevent other children from experiencing the same ordeal.

The Inspiration

  • Jacob was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma in December 2001 at age 4. He passed away at the age of 10 on August 23, 2008 . His legacy will always remain alive in the hearts of his family and friends.
  • Nicholas was diagnosed with Stage I Rhabdomyoscarcoma in December 2002 at age 4. He is currently in remission.

    ---------------------------

  • Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children.
  • Every school day, 46 young people, or two classrooms of students, are diagnosed with cancer in this country.
  • Childhood cancers affect more potential patient-years of life than any other cancer except breast and lung cancer.
  • The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown. At present, childhood cancer cannot be prevented.
  • Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region. In the United States, the incidence of cancer among adolescents and young adults is increasing at a greater rate than any other age group, except those over 65 years.

    The Impact
As a result of the donations collected through Golf Fore the Kids, the following progress has been made.

New aggressive strategies and treatment programs have been developed at The Jimmy Fund. These programs are leading to more effective care and better outcomes for cancer patients around the world.

Oncology patients at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center have benefited from the services of Dr. Robert Deutch, a clinical psychologist who works on-site at the oncology clinic. Dr. Deutch assists children and families in coping with the anxiety and pain associated with cancer treatment. These services are provided at no cost as a result of the donations collected through Golf Fore the Kids.

In addition, contributions will be made to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp where children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses find camaraderie, joy and a renewed sense of being a kid. They also get to do things that no one knew they were capable of doing.
